You may have read the book THE SECRET or seen the dvd or perhaps saw it talked about on Oprah. Has believing in this law of attraction worked positively for you in any way. Do you believe in this concept? How do you include the theory that you attract the sort of energy you put out into the universe into your everyday life?
Someone who USES the ‘Law of Attraction’ is the LEAST able to determine whether it is working or not. Let me explain why:
There is a very well-known psychological principle called ‘expectation’. When you are expecting something to happen, your brain becomes hypersensistive to it. So if you’re waiting at a bus stop and reading a book, you may not hear anything that sounds like a bus coming (even if one does) until you start actually expecting your bus to arrive. Then, because you become more and more sensitive, you may hear more and more things that ’sound’ like a bus and cause you to look up, even though there is no difference in the actual traffic passing by. If your bus is actually late, almost anything might start to sound like a bus. This is also very common for people with phobias – they begin to see the object of their fear almost anywhere and see spiders in dust bunnies and snakes in electrical wires.
So if you’re trying really hard to ‘attract’ things by being positive and waiting for all this good to just start pouring in, then you are building up your expectation. OF COURSE it will SEEM like a lot of good things suddenly start happening to you when they didn’t before. It’s actually the same number of things – you just notice them more (and see good things even when they’re not really there).
This is how the ‘Law of Attraction’ works. It’s not magic.
Don’t get me wrong, though… even this can be a very good thing. Sometimes how you expect something to be can very much change how it turns out (this is also a common psychological concept, sometimes called ‘the Pygmalion Effect’). If you’re grumpy to someone because you don’t think they’re going to be nice to you, then obviously they really ARE less likely to be nice. And if you’re nice because you’re expecting good things from them, you can cause them to be nice back. So in this way, the ‘Law of Attraction’ may actually work to really get you good things.
Again, it’s not magic. You’re getting the good things because you’re making them happen. You could have always done this. And you can still receive these benefits WITHOUT any kind of ’secret’ if you’re just nice to people whether or not you expect anything from them.
If you account for these two factors, I’d be greatly surprised if there was much left for strange, unseen and unmeasured energy balances to do at all. It’s a nice story, and it would be nice if it were true, but I am skeptical that there’s anything there that can’t be easily explained with other, simpler well-known phenomenon.
I’m an avid believer in the ideas of new thought and the Law of Attraction. However, I’m also involved in social work with those in poverty. Knowing how the law of attraction works, how can I avoid bringing in MORE poverty which is what I’m trying to prevent. Keep in mind I will be working with those in poverty regardless. How can I make it work for instead of against me in my career?
Keep in mind that the most successful and abundant people in the world donate their time, money and energy working in some of the poorest countries in the world. These people include, Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, Natalie Portman, Brad Pit and Angelina Joie.
Even though they surround themselves in poverty and lack they manage to create and manifest even more abundance.
Being surrounded by others who are poor does not have to make or keep you poor.
The root of poverty is caused by believing poverty thoughts like:
I can’t, life is too hard, I am supposed to be poor, what’s the point, I can’t make it, this is how my life is supposed to be, there is no hope for me, life will not get better from me, I don’t know how, I can’t learn how, why even try, and there are no opportunities for me.
Discover how these poverty thoughts create poverty by asking yourself and answering the following questions?
How do you feel when you believe these thoughts? What kinds of things do you do when you believe these thoughts? How do you treat others when you believe these thoughts? How do others treat you? What events and circumstances does the universe line up for you when you believe these thoughts?
Even though you might be surrounded by poverty day in and day out that doesn’t mean that anyone can force you to believe poverty thoughts.
You can choose to think and believe abundant thoughts like:
I can do this, there are opportunities for me, I am willing to look for opportunities to better myself, there are people who care about me and are willing to help me, I can learn, I am willing to do what it takes to reach my goals, what can I try differently, who can I ask, life is worth it, I am worth it, I can take one step at a time to create what I want, I can do what it takes to achieve my goals, life does support me, and I am loved and appreciated.
What does believing these abundant thoughts create for you? How do you feel when you believe these thoughts? What kinds of things do you do when you believe these thoughts? How do you treat others when you believe these thoughts? How do others respond to you? What events and circumstances does the universe line up for you when you believe these thoughts? Do you like what you create when you believe these thoughts?
You can influence others who think poor to believe abundant thoughts
There will be times when you will hear someone speak a poverty thought like, “I can’t do this, it is too difficult” and you can respond gently with an abundant thought like, “yes, it may be difficult but I am willing to help you and we can do this together”. Responding and influencing others with abundant thoughts will not only reinforce your own belief in abundance but it may help your clients gradually see that the world can be a friendly place to live in.
